Understanding Baby Sleep
Babies don't sleep the way adults do, and that's by design. Newborn sleep is built from shorter cycles — often around 40 to 50 minutes — with a large proportion of active, dream-like sleep. This lighter, busier sleep is thought to support the extraordinary brain development happening in the early months, but it also means babies rouse easily and wake often.
The other key piece is the body clock. At birth, babies have no established circadian rhythm — the internal 24-hour clock that helps the rest of us feel sleepy at night and alert by day. This system, along with the sleep hormone melatonin, matures over roughly the first three to six months, guided strongly by light and daily patterns. That's precisely why a two-week-old happily mixes up day and night.
As the brain matures, sleep slowly consolidates into longer stretches. Understanding that frequent waking is biologically normal — not a habit you've accidentally created — is the calm foundation everything else is built on.
